What Is Comiket?
Comic Market, universally known as Comiket, is a biannual fan-run convention held at the Tokyo Big Sight exhibition centre in Japan. It takes place every summer (late August) and winter (late December). First held in 1975, it has grown into the world's single largest fan event dedicated to doujinshi (fan-made comics), fan art, merchandise, cosplay, and indie creative works.
Comiket is not a commercial anime expo in the traditional sense. It is fundamentally a marketplace for fan creators, where thousands of independent artist circles set up tables to sell their original and fan-made works directly to the public. The scale is staggering — attendance regularly reaches hundreds of thousands of visitors across each three-day event.
Who Goes to Comiket?
Attendees fall into roughly two groups:
- Circles (サークル) – Creative groups or individual artists who apply for a table to sell their work. Space is allocated by application and lottery.
- General attendees (一般参加者) – Fans who come to browse, buy, and experience the event. No ticket is required; entry is free, though queues can be extremely long.
Cosplay is a major part of Comiket culture. Dedicated cosplay areas allow attendees to dress as their favourite characters and photograph each other, creating a vibrant secondary spectacle alongside the marketplace.
What Can You Buy at Comiket?
The product range at Comiket is enormous and almost entirely fan-created:
- Doujinshi – Fan-made manga featuring original or existing characters. This is the heart of the event.
- Fan art books & illustration collections – High-quality printed art from independent artists.
- Music CDs & Doujin Games – Independent music and video games, often inspired by existing franchises.
- Figures, keychains & merchandise – Custom-made physical goods in limited quantities.
- Zines & novels – Fan fiction and original literary works.
The Layout of Tokyo Big Sight
Comiket occupies the enormous Tokyo Big Sight convention centre in the Ariake district of Tokyo. The venue is divided into:
- East Hall – Major corporate booths and large circles with very high demand.
- West Hall – Mid-size and general circles, typically organised by fandom category.
- Outdoor areas – Cosplay zones and food stalls.
Each day of the event focuses on different categories. Corporate sponsors — including major publishers, game companies, and anime studios — occupy a dedicated section that often features exclusive merchandise and long queues of its own.
Practical Tips for Attending Comiket
- Plan ahead with the catalogue – The official Comiket catalogue is released before the event and maps every circle's location. It's essential for efficient navigation.
- Arrive early – For the most sought-after circles, queues form hours before opening. Popular items sell out fast.
- Bring cash – The vast majority of circles only accept cash (yen). ATMs near the venue get extremely busy.
- Dress for the weather – Summer Comiket is notoriously hot and humid. Bring water, cooling towels, and wear breathable clothing.
- Respect the rules – Photography restrictions, cosplay zones, and queuing etiquette are strictly observed. Follow all instructions from staff.
- Use a large bag or carry bag – You will likely buy more than you planned. A sturdy tote or backpack is essential.
Can International Visitors Attend?
Absolutely. Comiket is open to international visitors, and many anime fans travel from overseas specifically for the event. Japanese language skills help but are not strictly required — most circle tables display prices clearly, and the purchasing process is straightforward. However, understanding some basic Japanese phrases and numbers will make your experience much smoother.
Comiket is unlike any other event in the world. Whether you're a doujinshi collector, a cosplayer, or simply a curious anime fan, experiencing it in person is something genuinely unforgettable.
